Every hospital has an enormous amount of data residing in multiple clinical and associated systems such as PAS, EPR, RIS, maternity systems etc. The quality of the data is highly questionable and across all of the systems there are no data standards.
However, this data is extremely valuable and absolutely necessary for the smooth and efficient running of a hospital. This data is required for a plethora of uses (not just reporting). Extracting and making use of this data requires an Enterprise Data Management system. An Enterprise Data Management system is not a data warehouse, it uses some data warehouse principles, but it goes far beyond the boundaries and principles of a data warehouse. It’s an enterprise scale data infrastructure that automatically manages every aspect of the data.
Every trust needs one, however, every trust will have a unique set of requirements, a unique combination of clinical systems, each having been individually configured uniquely to their needs. The hospital will have nuances that are uniquely specific to their way of operating and the reports and analytics will not only be from a unique combination of visualisation tools but will have been configured specifically to the trust’s individual requirements.
As such, each trust perceives it requires a unique (custom built) enterprise data management system. The issue is that healthcare data and the demands of data within healthcare is abnormally high when compared to other industries. For that reason, without near-unlimited resources, custom built, one-off in-house or 3rd party developed solutions always fall short of what is needed.
